The center of Bern is full of beautiful medieval buildings that have been turned into a shopping mall of streets. Perhaps its most famous sight is the elaborate medieval clock tower with moving puppets. Einstein lived in Bern and worked at the patent office as an assistant examiner when he published his papers on special relativity. It is said he got his ideas about relativity while riding the tram away from the clock tower. If you are moving away from a clock and look back at it, the light you see must catch up with you. If your motion is near the speed of light, the clock you see will be slow. Einstein recognized in this a clue to the flexibility of time itself.
