SECOND PART OF THE POST CONTAINS SOME ROMAN EROTIC ART WORKS. POSSIBLY Not Safe For Work.
We drove into Naples, parked in the port, and walked a couple kilometers to the Naples National Archaeological Museum. Naples is over 2,800 years old and constantly lives in the shadow and threat of the volcano. Naples itself is a very very very dirty and dingy city. Graffiti covers EVERYTHING, even monuments and government buildings. Its definitely not a very touristy place, but can be interesting to explore and the museum is a definite must. The museum contains a large collection of Roman artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. It also has the famous Secret Cabinet, a collection of Roman erotic art. When these works were cataloged in the 18th century, they were deemed obscene and pornographic, and locked away. The secret room was only re-opened in 2005.
