We are not yet living the "dream". Its an always elusive mystical concept, fleeting and changing throughout your life. Who knows if anyone ever feels like they accomplished what they set out to in life. We are constantly dealing with thoughts that we are not accomplishing enough, not far enough, not "there" yet. During our travels we have learned to accept this state of doubt, to accept change and difficulties as the inevitable price of living in the moment, always keeping in mind that tomorrow is another day. Yesterday I caught a glimpse of the Grammys on tv while having a somewhat deep conversation about life path and goals at someone's house. While usually not my thing to watch rich people get awards, I had a thought that we forget that all of the stars performing and saying acceptance speeches were at some point struggling, were practicing in someone's garage, and the road ahead, the road to the limelight was infinitely long and uncertain.

The stars getting the awards always thank the people who helped them and stood by them. Its definitely nice to have people around you support your dreams and get what you are trying to do. Its even more amazing if someone is in a position to aid you take that next step, all of the stars were "discovered" by someone. Usually the discovery is at the end of a long road. If you are trying to do something new, something against the grain, the proportion of those that stand by you will be disproportionate to those who don't get it. Its just the way the world works, and the difficulties work to crystallize your direction and help you figure out what it is that you are chasing. A quote I saw on G+ this morning helped me reconcile some of these thoughts - “When everything seem to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it ....” ― Henry Ford

A quick image from Theodore Roosevelt Island - a national memorial located in the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Last weekend was the first time we have been to this small park and we have been living in the area for over 20 years. This is why we love photography, it pushes us to explore, to constantly experience new things and reach out to new people. For us its travel and photography, but it doesn't have to mean quitting your job and going thousands of miles. Whether its music, art, good wine or good company, adventure can be found anywhere, all you have to do is be open to it. [2/3/2012]
