Midwest is another world. Distances are measured by the odometer at the same regular intervals, but the eye sees something else, time feels different, the world IS bigger than you imagine. We drove through Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota to get to Badlands. Listening to NPR radio most of the way, a mix of [...]
Bear advice sounds like a bar scene dating column - If the bear is aware of you, identify yourself as a human. Talk to the bear in a calm voice and put your arms out to the side and move them slowly up and down. Avoid direct eye contact with the bear but do watch it to see what it does next. While camping in Indiana Dunes state park on the shore of lake Michigan, cooking dinner at 10pm we got surrounded by 3-5 raccoons who thought the dinner was for them. We would chase them off, but they were completely unafraid, and kept coming back, sneaking up behind us, jumping on table. We had to finish eating quick and chase them off with splashes of water. They would climb trees and sit staring at us. This went on till 1am, when we went into our tent. In 5 minutes when we looked outside there were 3 raccoons on top of the picnic table. [9/7/2011]
